Enhancing Research Capacity and infrastructure: Inauguration of the Virtual Lab, Research and Innovations Corner
On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the Global Surgery Research Hub of the University of Rwanda proudly inaugurated its facility: Virtual Lab, Research, and Innovations Corner at Remera Campus. The momentous event, which took place from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, marked a significant step forward in advancing research, innovation, and data management.
The newly established facility is designed to serve as a dynamic hub for research development, providing a conducive environment where scholars can refine research concepts, test ideas, and navigate the full research process from conceptualization to publication. Equipped with required equipments, the lab offers robust data management capabilities, including secure mega-data storage and archiving for critical academic and administrative records such as student exam e-copies and staff documents.

During the inauguration , Prof Faustin, the Director of Global Surgery Research Hub provided an insightful presentations on the facility’s vision, goals and expected impact, emphasizing its role to drive groundbreaking discoveries, foster collaborative research and bridge gaps between conceptual research and real-world application.
The Virtual Lab provides an ideal environment for evaluating and validating health technologies, testing research ideas, and refining study methodologies. With dedicated spaces for statistical analysis, scientific writing, and data management, the lab streamlines academic operations while enhancing access to advanced research tools.



The attendees had the opportunity to explore the facility through guided tours.
The Virtual Lab houses hub staff offices, a centralized data center, and semi-outdoor meeting areas designed to inspire creativity and collaboration. This dynamic space serves as a cornerstone for advancing research excellence and driving impactful discoveries. During the inauguration, the Global Surgery Research Hub donated three projectors to the School of Medicine and Pharmacy to enhance teaching activities. Additionally, the Director formally handed over the newly renovated and fully equipped boardroom to the school. This multifunctional space will not only serve as a boardroom but will also host various Global Surgery Research Hub activities, including journal clubs, meetings, and other academic engagements.
